Membrane Canopies for Hotels, Resorts and Tourist Sites in the Rainy Season
From Rp850,000/m²Minimum project Rp20 millionSee the rate card
The rainy season changes how guests use a hotel. The pool empties from three in the afternoon. Garden dinners move inside or get cancelled. Guests step out of the car at the lobby and get wet before they check in. At tourist sites, visitors crowd under a food stall roof, then leave earlier than planned.
A membrane canopy keeps an outdoor area usable in the rain. It does not turn the area into a closed room. Air keeps moving and daylight still comes through. If you want the roof up before this season peaks, the work needs to start now.
Rainy season 2026/2027: start and peak
The BMKG forecast released on 22 September 2026 says the rain starts late this year in most of Indonesia. It starts over 24.66 percent of the land area in November 2026. Another 17.31 percent follows in December. The peak falls between December 2026 and February 2027, and it differs by region.
One point matters for hotels and tourist sites. The gap between the start and the peak is shorter than usual. BMKG also warns of sudden spikes in rainfall. For an outdoor area, that means gutters and roof slopes get tested in the first weeks.
What you lose when it rains
- The pool and its bar go quiet. Drinks and snack orders by the pool stop with them.
- Outdoor dining cannot be sold. Garden and rooftop tables close. Restaurant capacity drops to the indoor seats.
- Outdoor events depend on the weather. Wedding and corporate clients ask for a backup plan before they sign. A hotel with no answer often loses to another venue.
- The lobby drop-off draws complaints. Guests run from the car to the door with their bags. Staff with umbrellas cannot cover several cars at once.
- Tourist sites lose visiting hours. Visitors who find no shelter leave early, and spending at the food area stops.
Hotel entrance canopy and drop-off
The entrance canopy, or porte cochere, is the first part of the hotel a guest sees. Its job is simple. Guests step out, staff unload the bags, and nobody gets wet. Membrane suits this well because it spans wide on few columns. Cars can drive in and turn without dodging posts.
We settle these points in the design drawings:
- Clear height. We measure it from the tallest vehicle that will enter. That includes tour buses if the hotel takes groups.
- Where the water goes. Roof water runs into gutters and pipes away from the guest path. It must not drop in front of the car door.
- Slanting rain. We size the overhang so wind-driven rain stays out of the drop-off zone.
- Link to the building. The canopy can fix to the lobby facade or stand on its own columns. The existing structure decides which.
Pool canopy and poolside shade
An outdoor pool roof does not have to cover all the water. Hotels most often need shade over the pool bar, the sun loungers, and the shallow end where children play. Guests still swim in the open part when it is sunny. When rain comes suddenly, they have shelter without going back to the room.
Membrane fabric lets part of the daylight through. The area below stays bright without direct sun. The sides can stay open, so the pool does not feel closed in like a room under a solid roof.
Near a pool, the steel frame gets splashed and sits in damp air every day. We agree the steel coating system and the bolt type at the design stage, as we do for coastal sites. We place columns outside the wet area where we can. That way the finished pool deck does not need to be broken up.
Covered walkways between buildings
Resorts with separate villas share one problem in the rain. So do hotels with the restaurant in another building. Guests must cross open ground for breakfast, the spa, or the way back to the room. A membrane walkway canopy links those points. The path still feels open, not like a closed corridor.
For long paths we usually use a barrel vault or a row of small repeated gables. Walkway width is the first thing we ask about on the survey. A path for guests on foot is different from one that buggies and housekeeping trolleys also use.
Outdoor dining and event lawns
Garden restaurants, rooftops, and wedding lawns sell at a high price, and rain hits them first. With a membrane roof, a hotel can sell outdoor event packages with a clear answer for the client. If it rains, the event goes ahead in the same place.
For an event venue, a column-free span matters more than the roof shape. The stage and guest tables move for every event, so a column in the middle is always in the way. We can build hanging points for decor lights and sound into the frame from the start. Event vendors then do not tie loads to the fabric.
Tourist sites: membrane gazebos, queue areas, and stages
At theme parks, gardens, beaches, and food districts, afternoon rain sends visitors to the nearest roof. If there is not enough roof, they go home.
- Membrane gazebos. Rest points spread across the site. A cone on one centre post is the most common shape. The same design can repeat at several points.
- Ticket queues and entrances. A queue in the rain is a poor first impression, before visitors even get in.
- Food courts. A canopy over shared tables keeps visitors seated and spending when it rains.
- Stages and amphitheatres. Scheduled shows do not need to stop for drizzle.
The curved form of a membrane roof is easy to spot from a distance. At a tourist site, the roof can become part of how people recognise the place.
Built for heavy rain
A canopy for the rainy season must be designed for heavy rain. Shade alone is not enough. Most membrane roof problems start here.
- Fabric slope. A surface that is too flat holds water. The water adds weight, the fabric stretches, and the pond grows. We set the slope in the design drawings, not after the first leak.
- Gutters and drainage. We size them for heavy rain that returns every afternoon. Water goes to the existing drains, not onto guest paths or into the pool.
- Wind load. We calculate it in both directions for your site: pressure down and uplift. Open sites on the coast or on a slope usually get stronger wind.
- Fabric type. PVC with a PVDF coating suits most hotel projects. PTFE suits large roofs that must last a very long time. Our PTFE vs PVC guide compares the two.
- Care after the first season. Leaves and moss build up in gutters fast. Check the fabric tension after the first rainy season. Our maintenance guide lists the steps.
Schedule: from survey to installed roof
Count back from the rainy season peak.
- Survey and measurement. We visit the site and measure. We note the soil, vehicle access, and the hotel's operating hours.
- 3D design and structural calculations. You approve the shape and column positions before fabrication starts.
- Fabrication in our Bogor workshop. We make the steel frame and the membrane at the same time. This usually takes two to four weeks.
- Installation on site. Foundations, frame erection, then fitting the fabric and tensioning it to the design tension.
A simple canopy usually takes two to four weeks from the survey. A medium commercial project, such as a pool roof or event lawn, takes one to two months. A survey in November still leaves time to finish before the peak in many regions. A project that starts in January goes up in the middle of the rain, and the weather slows the foundation work.
The hotel does not need to close during installation. We plan noisy work hours and heavy equipment access with the hotel team. The work area stays separate from guest paths. Each stage is set out in our installation process guide.
Price and how we work
Drop-off canopies, walkways, and gazebos in standard shapes usually fall under the Signature package, from Rp950,000 per m². Pool roofs, event venues, and special shapes with wide spans fall under Custom Structure, from Rp1,050,000 per m². Our minimum project value is Rp20 million. Each package is set out on the official rate card.
We only take complete packages: design, supply, and installation. The warranty covers the membrane for up to 10 years and the workmanship for 1 month, at every location. For sites outside Greater Jakarta, crew mobilisation appears as a separate line in the quote. Hotels, resorts, and beach clubs in Bali have their own page: membrane canopy Bali.
Estimate your project
Enter the area to cover. The estimate uses our published starting rates and is not a quote. The final price follows the survey and the working drawings.
The estimate appears here once both sizes are filled in.
This is under our minimum project value of {MIN}. We usually cannot take an area this size on its own. If you have other areas to cover in the same project, add them to the size above.
Frequently asked questions
Can a membrane canopy be installed while the hotel stays open?
Yes. We fabricate the frame and fabric in our workshop. On site, only the foundations, frame erection, and fabric fitting remain. We plan noisy work hours and heavy equipment access with the hotel team. The work area stays separate from guest paths.
Can a membrane canopy handle heavy rain and strong wind?
Yes, when the fabric slope, gutter capacity, and wind load are calculated for the site. We calculate wind load in both directions: pressure down and uplift. We set the fabric slope in the design drawings so no part holds water.
Is it safe to put a membrane canopy over a swimming pool?
Yes. The fabric never touches the water, and rainwater drains away from the pool edge. The steel frame needs care because of splashing and damp air. We choose the steel coating system and bolt type at the design stage. We place columns outside the wet area where we can.
How long does a hotel entrance canopy take?
A drop-off canopy in a standard shape usually takes two to four weeks from survey to installation. Workshop fabrication takes most of that time. Special shapes or very wide spans can take one to two months.
Does the area under a membrane get dark or hot?
It does not get dark, because the fabric lets part of the daylight through. The fabric also cuts part of the sun heat. The canopy sides can stay open so air keeps moving. The result is shade that stays bright.
