Membrane Canopies in and around Semarang
Semarang is interesting for membrane work because the ground under it is not uniform. One city holds both a low coastal plain that floods regularly and a hill district climbing towards Candi and Banyumanik with completely different site conditions. Before going further, we should be straight with you: AeroSpan has no completed project in Semarang. What this page describes is national service coverage from our workshop in Bogor, including the logistics and the cost that come with it.
Lower city and upper city, two different sets of conditions
In the lower city, around Tanjung Emas, Terboyo, and the Kaligawe corridor, the design driver is not only the span. It is the ground and the water. Tidal flooding and a high water table push foundation detailing and column base treatment into a serious conversation at survey stage. Where steel meets the slab is the first thing to corrode if it sits in water regularly, and that is not a problem paint can solve after the structure is standing.
Up the hill the issue shifts to contour and wind. Terraced plots around Candi, Gombel, and Tembalang are rarely flat, so mast positions follow the levels that exist and the fabric geometry follows the masts. Being exposed at elevation also means a different wind load from a sheltered plot hemmed in by buildings. Both are things we check on the survey visit, because photographs alone do not tell you enough.
Building types that suit it
- Factory and industrial estate canopies: loading bays, covered walkways between buildings, and vehicle holding areas.
- Campus and school facilities: linking walkways, student gathering areas, and sports courts.
- Parking canopies for offices, hotels, and hospitals.
- Cafe and restaurant outdoor areas, including the ones trading on a city view from the upper slopes.
- Membrane facades that refresh an older building and cut west-facing heat at the same time.
Why membrane instead of metal roofing
For a wide span with few columns in the middle, membrane wins on self weight. The supporting structure is lighter because the roof load is small, and that feeds straight through to foundation size. On lower Semarang ground, where bearing capacity deserves attention, that weight difference is not a footnote. On top of that, diffused light through the fabric keeps the area below usable in daylight without lamps, and the reflected heat is far lower than under metal sheeting.
The Bogor to Semarang route and what changes
All fabrication finishes at our Bogor workshop: steelwork built, fabric cut to the pattern produced by the 3D design and structural calculations, then everything shipped to site ready to assemble. For Semarang that means overland delivery on the Trans Java toll road, and the things to plan are the longest component dimension, the truck type, and site access. Narrow lanes, height barriers, and campus grounds that only open to vehicles at certain hours all get recorded at survey so they are not a surprise on unloading day.
The install crew follows the material and stays near the site until the work is finished. That is what keeps on-site work concentrated, and for an industrial estate or a campus that stays operational, the schedule can be split around your working hours. The threshold for out-of-region sites
A minimum project value applies nationally, and for sites outside Greater Jakarta the material transport and crew mobilisation are calculated separately and itemised in the quotation. The official figures sit on the rate card rather than on this page, so you always see the current version. In practice, a small one-off job in Semarang often does not add up, because mobilisation swallows too much of the total next to the value of the work. What does work is a mid-size project and up, or several structures on one property built in a single mobilisation.

What if the site is in an area that floods at high tide?
That gets read on the survey visit and carried into the design, particularly the foundation detailing and column base treatment. It is far better handled before the design is locked than worked around after the structure is up.
