Membrane Structures for Bali Projects

Bali asks two things of a roof at once: it has to look right, and it has to survive a harsh setting. Resorts, beach clubs, restaurants, and villas there sell an experience, so a structure that looks improvised costs the owner money straight away. At the same time, sea air and coastal sun are more aggressive than anything an inland city throws at a building. Worth saying first: AeroSpan has no completed project in Bali. This page sets out our service coverage to Bali from the Bogor workshop, including what changes once material has to cross to the island.

Salt and UV set the specification, not taste

On a coastal site two things work on the structure all year. Salt accelerates corrosion on steelwork and connection hardware, while strong sun tests the colour stability and surface coating of the fabric. For sites near the water, that means stepping up the protection system on the steel and being deliberate about connection components, and both decisions belong in the design stage. Upgrading later means dismantling, which always costs more.

Maintenance has a different character too. Dust mixed with salt settles on the fabric and needs cleaning more often than inland, especially on surfaces sheltered from direct rain that never get washed naturally. The method and the intervals are in our membrane maintenance guide.

Building character rules in Badung and Gianyar

Bali has local regulations that protect the character of its buildings, covering height and how a structure sits with its surroundings. In areas like Badung and Gianyar this is watched more closely than in most other places. In practice, the form, height, and colour of a structure are best checked with your architect or whoever handles permits before the design is locked. We adapt the design to whatever comes back, but the permit process stays with you or your consultant.

From a design point of view a membrane has room to work with. Fabric panels can sit low and spread wide, following the lines of the existing building, while still covering a broad span with few columns underneath. Fabric colour and light transmission can be chosen to sit alongside local timber and stone rather than dominate them.

Projects that most often use membrane

• Resort and hotel outdoor areas: poolsides, breakfast terraces, and covered links between buildings.
• Beach clubs, restaurants, and cafes that need shade without blocking the view.
• Event spaces and wedding venues that have to be usable regardless of the weather.
• Parking canopies and drop-offs for hotels and commercial buildings.
• Facades and shading screens that tame western sun without closing off openings.

Crossing to Bali: how the material travels

The route is straightforward. Fabrication finishes at the Bogor workshop, the material goes overland across Java, crosses from Ketapang to Gilimanuk, then continues by road to site. That crossing is an extra step that has to be built into the schedule, because port queues and conditions in the strait can move the arrival date. So we leave a sensible gap between the delivery date and the day the crew starts, rather than have a crew waiting on site for a truck.

The install team travels separately and stays near the site until the work is finished. Every component arrives ready to assemble, which keeps time on site short and limits how long a resort or restaurant has to work around us.

Project size and cross-island mobilisation

Because of the crossing and the long haul, Bali projects carry a higher threshold than projects on Java. A minimum project value applies nationally, and material transport plus crew mobilisation for sites outside Greater Jakarta are calculated separately and written into the quotation. The official figures are on the rate card. For a single small canopy the numbers honestly rarely work. For a resort outdoor area, several structures on one property, or a renovation package built in one go, they work well. Workmanship and a membrane warranty of up to 15 years and a 1-year workmanship warranty do not change with distance.
