The question "what is the membrane tent price per meter?" almost always gets a single number back, and that is why the formal quotation later comes as a shock. A per-m² figure is the easiest way to compare offers, but what drives it sits below the surface. How the per-m² figure is actually produced
A per-m² price is a division, not a tariff: total project cost divided by installed fabric area. The total covers design and structural calculations, steel, fabric, fabrication, finishing, mobilisation, installation, and inspection before handover. Because the largest share often sits in the frame and the field work rather than the fabric, two canopies with identical fabric area can land at very different per-metre numbers. That is normal, not a sign anyone is playing games.
Span and clear height
Span is the distance between supports, and its effect on cost is not linear. Adding span adds bending moment the frame has to resist, so the steel section moves up a class, connections get heavier, and foundations grow with them. A canopy that has to keep the middle free of columns always costs more per metre than one of the same area allowed a centre column. Clear height behaves the same way: the higher it goes, the more wind it catches.
Form, curvature, and support detailing
A simple flat pitched canopy is the lightest thing to build. Once the form moves into conical, hypar, or several curved surfaces meeting each other, cutting patterns multiply, total weld length rises, and every support detail becomes a one-off. The shapes that photograph best usually eat the most workshop hours. When budget is tight, simplifying the geometry almost always saves more than dropping a fabric class.
Fabric class and grade
Membrane fabric spans a wide price range. Local PVC, mid-range imported PVC, PVC with a PVDF topcoat, and PTFE sit at different service lives and different price classes. Fabric weight and tensile strength also have to rise with the span being carried, so a large structure cannot use a light-class fabric even where the area matches a small canopy. Ground conditions and foundations
This is the variable people most often leave out of their own estimate. If the structure can land on existing columns or beams that are genuinely strong enough, foundation cost approaches zero. If new foundations are needed, the soil decides: firm ground takes pad footings, while soft ground or fill can demand something much deeper. Two sites with an identical canopy design can differ substantially on this alone, and it only becomes clear after the survey.
Site access and working at height
Material unloaded right beside the working area costs differently from material cut short to fit a goods lift, or carried by hand up to an upper-floor rooftop. Working at height adds scaffolding, lifting gear, and time. A site that only allows night or weekend work adds more again. None of this shows on the design drawing, but all of it shows in the final number.
Why small areas cost more per metre
Every project carries the same baseline costs regardless of size: 3D design, structural calculations, fabrication setup, and getting a crew to site. Those costs do not shrink because the canopy is small. Spread over a small area the per-metre figure runs high; spread over a large one it drops. That is why a domestic carport canopy always looks expensive per metre next to a sports court roof, even though the project value is a fraction of it. Why one flat number misleads
A contractor naming a fixed membrane tent price per meter before surveying is guessing, and that guess has to be safe for them. If conditions turn out heavier than assumed, the difference reappears later as extra work.
