Case Study: Maxs Sport Center Grandstand
Grandstand roofing is some of the most technical membrane work there is. On the Maxs Sport Center grandstand project, the challenge was the classic one for this category: spectators need protection from sun and rain, but not a single column may block the view of the field.
Why grandstand roofs are hard
Cantilever structure. Since front columns would block sightlines, grandstand roofs typically reach out freely from the back, like an arm floating above the crowd. The entire roof load, plus wind suction from below, is carried from one side. The structural calculations are far heavier than for a conventionally supported canopy.
Wind from two directions. A cantilevered roof doesn't only resist wind pressing down. Air passing under the roof plane generates uplift, and it's this push-pull combination that usually sizes the steel. Getting this wrong isn't an aesthetic problem; it's the safety of hundreds of spectators underneath.
Spectator comfort. The right membrane keeps a grandstand bright without glare and never stuffy, because the fabric reflects most of the sun's heat. That's a real difference from metal-roofed stands that bake in the afternoon.
Our approach
Design starts from the spectators' sightlines, not the roof shape. Once the viewing geometry is secure, our engineers calculate the cantilever against the site's wind loads, and the membrane form follows tension logic: correct curvature makes the fabric rigid, sheds water fast, and stops it flapping in strong wind.
As with all our projects, frame and fabric were fabricated in our own workshop and installed by our own crew. For an active sports facility, that means installation can be scheduled around activities, and the finished structure matches the numbers on paper.
The result
A grandstand with a clean view of the field, shaded all day, on a structure calculated for a long life. This project sits alongside the HM Sampoerna basketball court and PG Sport Center in our sports portfolio.
